What a full rewire involves

Core electrical work

  • Replacement fixed wiring throughout the home.
  • A modern fuse board and circuit protection.
  • Sockets, switches, lighting and appliance circuits.
  • Earthing and bonding upgrades where required.
  • Assessment of smoke and heat alarm requirements.
  • Inspection, testing and completion certification.

Additional options

  • Smart lighting and home automation.
  • Data cabling and mesh Wi-Fi.
  • EV charger installation or preparation.
  • Solar PV installation or preparation.

The layout, number of electrical points and equipment depend on the property and your requirements.

Assessment and installation

Establish what is needed

Where the wiring condition is uncertain, we usually start with periodic inspection and testing. The findings help determine whether repairs, upgrades, partial rewiring or a full rewire are needed. About periodic inspections.

Plan the installation

Socket and lighting positions, fittings and equipment supplies are set out for the property. Access, power interruptions and the work sequence are planned around occupancy and other renovation work.

Install the wiring and fittings

First fix involves cable routes and wiring, which may require chasing walls and access beneath floors or above ceilings. Second fix involves fitting and connecting sockets, switches, lighting and other equipment.

Test and hand over

We inspect and test the completed installation and provide the appropriate Safe Electric Completion Certificate. Keep it with your property records.

House rewiring questions

How much does a house rewire cost?

The price depends on the property, access and specification. Occupancy, the number of electrical points, fittings and additional equipment affect the work involved. We assess the property and your requirements before providing a quotation.

How long does a house rewire take?

We agree the expected schedule after assessing the property and the work required, including access and coordination with other trades.

Can I stay in my house during rewiring?

We can work in occupied homes. Room access, power interruptions and the sequence of work are discussed before starting.

Can a new fuse board replace the need for rewiring?

A fuse board upgrade replaces the board and its protective devices, not the cables throughout the home. It may be suitable where existing circuits are in adequate condition. Inspection and testing help establish what is needed.

Are making good and plastering included?

Making good is included in our rewiring work. We can arrange a plasterer as an additional service where a plaster finish is required. Access and finishing requirements are discussed when preparing the quotation.

What certificate do I receive?

We provide the appropriate Safe Electric Completion Certificate for the completed installation work. This differs from a Periodic Inspection Report, which records the condition of an existing installation. Safe Electric certification guidance.

Is there an SEAI grant for house rewiring?

SEAI’s individual home energy grants do not list a standalone house-rewiring grant. Energy upgrades have their own eligibility requirements. Check current SEAI grant measures.
